Capt. Mackintire

We dove the Capt. Mackintire not too long after it sank while under tow off the coast of Maine near Kennebunkport.  A couple of very chilly April dives in New England I will say!

The tug was built in 1944 by Pensacola Shipyard and Engine Company of Pensacola, Florida (hull #12) as the ST-725 for the United States Army.  It had a long career under a number of names until 2015 when she went out of documentation.  She sank in about 140 feet of water, and will be a nice dive for many divers for years to come.

The ship was pretty well stripped prior to the tow, so not much to see.  The rudder was removed for towing. There is a lot of damage to the hull probably caused when it hit the rocky bottom.  A great gash in the hull opens into the engine room if anyone is interested in access.  I squeezed into the bridge and there is really nothing to see there. Most if not all of the portholes are still there but are damaged or broken making them not worth the effort to me.
